In a bid to out-do all other contenders in the bigness department, Toyota introduced the Tundra CrewMax at the 2007 Detroit Auto Show. It's no secret who the company's target was with this behemoth: The Dodge Ram Mega Cab.

Yet Despite DaimlerChrysler's highest hopes, the Mega Cab has not met sales expectations, and more than a few automotive pundits are wondering about the same thing for Toyota's latest big hoss.

The DoubleCab model offers a plenty-generous back seat, but the CrewMax allows you to recline the rear seat up to 40 degrees. Of course, the cavernous interior comes at the expense of bed length, and the CrewMax is available only with the shortest 5 1/2 foot bed. All this begs the question, are the CrewMax and Mega Cab answers to a question nobody asked? Are they simply a game of one-upmanship between the fullsize contenders? What's next? The 6-door Silverado UltraCab?

With 381 horsepower, the new Tundra has certainly come to battle prepared in the powertrain department. But as Toyota's own data has shown, domestic truck customers the most brand-loyal of any car-buying demographic. Will the power-packed engine and cavernous cab option be enough to conquest the last major bastion of the Big 3 strength? Nobody expects the Tundra to unseat the F-series and Silverado overnight, but it's certainly more prepared now than ever before.
