It seems lately, the word "van" has been in a neck-and-neck race to the bottom of the coolness scale with "station wagon" at least if the OE marketers had any say in it. But looking at the new Ford Airstream concept, one word comes to my mind: Van.
Yet throughout the press release, Ford stubbornly refuses to call the Airstream anything other than a "crossover." But it looks nothing like the Edge or Freestyle, which Ford also insists on calling crossovers. So does that make the Econoline and Club Wagon "Jumbo Crossovers?" The marketing types might try to split hairs and say that because the Airstream and others are unit-body, and the Econoline is a body-on-frame truck chassis, that's the distinction. But as any good van enthusiast knows, many of Motown's vans from the '60s and '70s were unibody as well.
Well, whatever "they" want to call it, I'm calling the Airstream a van, and a darned cool one at that. What do you guys think?
