Chevy Reveals Official Details on HHR SS

Chevrolet has released official details on the 2008 HHR SS, and much of the speculative buzz leading up to its official introduction has been confirmed. The engine will be the 260-horsepower direct-injection turbocharged 2.0 liter Ecotec from the Pontiac Solstice GXP and Saturn Sky Redline.

In addition, it features a 5-speed manual transmission developed by GM
Powertrain's Swedish division (read: Saab) and a suspension package
calibrated on the famed Nurburgring racecourse in Germany.

Performance forecasts are 0.86g of grip, and a 0-60 time of 6.3
seconds. SS-specific interior enhancements include more aggressively
bolstered sport seats, and an A-pillar mounted boost gauge.

Our Take: It's about time! The HHR was a great retro package that lacked power. No more. Now...the question remains, is Chevy going to offer an SS Panel Wagon?

1. That doesn't look half bad really. I always thought the HHR looked pretty good for what it was but the SS version looks even better. That would be pretty sweet if they made a SS Panel Wagon as well.

2. Okay, bravo to GM for adding performance variants to most of its bread and butter models. But I have a beef, not only with General Motors but all of the Auto Industry. Here goes...

WHY IN THE NAME OF HECK IS IT RELEVANT FOR EVERY SINGLE CAR HOW FAST IT GOES AROUND THE NURBURGRING IN GERMANY! It was a good marketing ploy when GM released the first Cadillac CTS five years ago as it was going to be competing against BMW. And the world famous German race track made clear the intention of Cadillac to make its vehicle handle to the highest standards. I get that. But most every vehicle released today, even ones destined for airport rental lots, talk about their Nurburgring speed. How fast does one need to get to the Howard Johnson? Just a thought...

3. Balboa, I applaud the domestics for doing everything they can to "raise the bar" when it comes to vehicle performance, R&D, etc. It's pretty obvious the Germans are generally recognized as being the standard-bearers for handling and chassis dynamics. Yeah, so what if it's "only" an HHR. At least Chevy is getting serious about what "SS" really means, not just arbitrarily slapping it on a trim package. I agree that it would be pretty silly to test a base Aveo at the Nurburgring. Then again, if they ever did an SS version, I'd like to know it was "tuned on the Nurburgring." :-)
