Biofuels - Smart or Stupid?

Biofuel Tradeoffs

So has anyone noticed fuel prices lately? It is all over the news media coverage about the excessive amount prices have gone up here in the Los Angeles area.

Also has your wife, girlfriend or significant other complained lately about the prices of baked goods? You know, the tasty treats made with flour we all enjoy from the local bakeries. Well there appears to be a shortage of flour for baking.

What does baked goods have to do with fuel prices? Simple. For those individuals who are making or using ethanol based fuel, guess what? It comes from corn and since corn is used in the production of bio diesel as well as methanol, it all literally begins there.

Farmers are being subsidized to grow corn and since corn is the essential ingredient in flour, be prepared to feel the extra pinch at the grocery store or your favorite restaurant that normally would serve bread while you are waiting for four lunch or dinner to show up.

So who wins here? Your vehicle is now running of something other than a petroleum based fuel source but the sacrifice is your tummy. Smart idea or poorly planned? Are these the trade-offs one has to make for attempting to be more environmentally friendly? You tell me.
