During our Of the Year testing, this wanna-be SUV got stuck but a truck didn't, what does that tell us?
It was praised as the most capable Toyota 4WD is years and it would resurrect a heritage that was a staple in 'Yota history. So why is it that after going up the same exact path in a Nissan Titan 4WD that this FJ was stuck up to its running boards? Why, because the 4.0L that propels the Tacoma to decent speeds is too busy being communicated to by multiple computers and inputs in the 4WD system to get the FJ out of its own way. We towed the FJ out of the hole it dug itself in with a Dodge Ram 5.7L Hemi. Funny, trucks were blasting through the dunes and throwing up loose sand like they were capable off-road vehicles. After the FJ was freed, it remained parked until it was time to leave and then we were forced to pull rank and make one of the ad guys drive it home. I'm a fan of Toyota products with the exception of one not-so-fun FJ. Cruiser yes, bruiser no.
