Last year, I covered the Route 66 Rendezvous in San Bernardino, California, at the invitation of the Inland Vans Berdoo custom van club, and had a great time hanging out with those guys and talking with them about their custom vans. I received a phone call and E-mail from Mike Cook, one of the club members, that the club was going to be inducted into the California & San Bernardino Route 66 Cruzin Hall of Fame.
This is a major milestone for the club, which has been around for nearly 40 years, and will join the ranks of such legendary names as Sid Iskerderian, Hooker Headers, Ed "Big Daddy" Roth, Goodyear Tires, Firestone Tires, The 32' Ford Roadster, and 30+ other Hot Rod builders and innovators.
Unfortunately, I don't think I'll be able to make it in person to the ceremony and show this year, but I wanted to take the time to recognize this club, and those that were an instrumental part of Truckin' magazine's early years as a van enthusiast magazine, and helped it to become what it is today.
Although custom vans are rarely still featured in the magazine, those that have been around long enough recognize the contributions of the custom van community to the truck enthusiast culture, and helped lay the groundwork for the extensive custom scene that has developed in the last several decades.
Congratulations, guys, on this significant honor, and hope you'll continue to be a part of the extended Truckin' family, and that you'll keep the custom van scene and hobby alive and well for many years to come.
