We've all see it, the awesome Ford truck at the show with a great interior and amazing paint and body work and a small-block Chevy under the hood. We all know why they take the Chevy route, usually it's because parts are cheaper and easily available. Not that there's anything wrong with it, but if money were no object, what would you choose to put under (or through) the hood in your Ford truck?

Here's a quick list of my favorite Ford V-8s

1) The flathead Ford V-8 was the first mainstream V-8 and gave birth to hot rodding. Plus, it looks amazing in just about any sort of traditional trim. The go-to engine for pre-war trucks.

2) Ford's SOHC V-8 is big, it's rare, and it's got some cool valve covers. It would make a statement under the hood of a 60s Ford.

3) Speaking of cool valve covers, Ford's take on the hemispherical combustion chamber netted the rare Boss 429. New castings will help parts availability, so hopefully we'll see more of them. Oh yeah, and they have amazing power potential.

4) Here's my pick. This photo of a Mustang with a Ford GAA  V-8 spread around internet car forums like wildfire. The engine is an 1,100CI all-aluminum V-8 that was used in WWII-era Sherman M4A3 tanks among other things. It's based on a 60-degree aircraft V-12 that was in development before the war. Output of the V-8 was 450hp @ 2,600rpm and torque was an immense 950lb-ft @ 2,200rpm. It would turn you and your truck into a living and breathing Ed Roth caricature!
